Haunted Hi-Fi Episode 2: Crookston, NE 88.3FM

It’s late. You’re driving along empty and desolate roads. You scroll the dial, and somewhere lost in the static you find a station you’ve never found before. There’s no DJ that speaks. Just music you’ve never heard, or heard long ago but can’t remember the artist.

Tomorrow, the station won’t be there. You’ll question whether you even heard it at all.

Until some other late night, when you’re driving along empty and desolate roads, and you scroll the dial and find yourself tuned in to Haunted Hi-Fi.

Human settlements, like any organic structure, are susceptible to the pressures of natural selection and the survivability of adaptation. Inevitably, as with any participant in the evolutionary lottery, dead ends will arise and, for whatever reason, terminate. Many places that prospered and flourished during the age of the iron horse fell to the wayside in the mid-20th century as highway bypasses and interstates carved their intricate paths into the landscape and the major channels of traffic stopped passing by them directly.
